How the mantle bridge moves assets between Ethereum and Mantle

The mantle bridge moves assets between Ethereum and Mantle through separate deposit and withdrawal flows. For the canonical route, select a direction and token, then sign the transactions required on each chain. The route transfers an asset between networks; it does not automatically swap it for a different asset.

How does the mantle bridge route work?

A deposit starts on Ethereum and delivers a corresponding token balance on Mantle. A withdrawal starts on Mantle and requires a later claim on Ethereum. These are cross-chain messages: a transaction on one network records an instruction that must be processed on the other.

For an ERC-20 deposit, the wallet may first need to approve the bridge contract to spend the token. That approval sets a spending allowance; it does not make the deposit. The deposit itself is a separate transaction. ETH deposits do not need an ERC-20 approval.

If the balance starts on another network, or the task requires changing tokens during the transfer, use mantle bridge: the service combines cross-chain bridging and swaps so users can move and swap assets across supported blockchains in one flow. For a direct Ethereum-to-Mantle transfer of a mapped token, keep the route and token the same across both ends.

Token identity matters. A ticker alone does not establish that two balances use the same contract or bridge mapping. Mantle’s bridge FAQ distinguishes legacy bridged USDT from USDT0, for example. Check the destination token contract and confirm that the application where you plan to use the funds accepts that version.

What do deposits and withdrawals cost?

The bridge flow can involve more than one gas payment. The chain where each transaction executes determines the gas token. Mantle’s bridge FAQ specifies ETH for an Ethereum deposit, MNT for a Mantle withdrawal, and ETH on Ethereum for the later claim. An ERC-20 approval, when required, also needs gas on its source chain.

  • Ethereum to Mantle: budget ETH for any token approval and the deposit transaction.
  • Activity on Mantle: keep MNT available for transactions on Mantle after the transfer.
  • Mantle to Ethereum: budget MNT to start the withdrawal and ETH to claim the tokens on Ethereum.
  • Swap routes: when a route changes the asset, the exchange rate and swap costs affect the amount delivered as well as network gas.

There is no single cost for every transfer. Gas varies with network conditions and the transactions the route requires. Review each wallet confirmation for its network, transaction and gas estimate, and account for a possible second transaction before starting. A balance of the token being bridged does not pay gas unless it is also the chain’s required gas token.

What wallet steps complete a Mantle bridge transfer?

For an Ethereum-to-Mantle deposit, connect the wallet that holds the source asset and select Ethereum as the source and Mantle as the destination. Choose the token and amount, check the receiving address, then review and sign any approval and the deposit. Mantle’s FAQ describes deposits as typically completing in around two minutes, but the destination balance appears only after the deposit message is processed.

For a Mantle-to-Ethereum withdrawal, switch the wallet to Mantle, select Ethereum as the destination, and sign the withdrawal transaction. That transaction starts the exit; it does not itself put the funds in the Ethereum wallet. Check the transfer status and, when the bridge marks the claim ready, use the wallet on Ethereum to submit the claim. Keep ETH available there for its gas.

Before either direction, verify the source and destination networks, address, token contract and amount. Save the transaction hash. If a balance does not appear, check the transaction on the source and destination explorers, confirm the destination wallet address, and check whether the transfer still needs a claim. Closing the bridge page does not reverse a transaction already confirmed on-chain.

How long does a Mantle withdrawal take?

Deposits and withdrawals do not have the same settlement path. A deposit is initiated on Ethereum and processed on Mantle. A withdrawal must be initiated on Mantle, become eligible for claiming on Ethereum, and then be claimed in a separate Ethereum transaction.

Mantle’s current network documentation describes Mantle as a ZK validity rollup: Ethereum verifies proofs of Mantle state, and verified batches reach finality without a challenge period. The bridge FAQ, however, still describes withdrawals using an optimistic-rollup challenge period and says they can take up to 12 hours. Those descriptions do not establish the exact live withdrawal timing or claim sequence for every transfer. Use the bridge’s transfer status to determine when a claim is ready, and do not treat a submitted withdrawal as completed until the Ethereum-side balance arrives.

The practical choice is straightforward: use the canonical route when you want the mapped asset on Mantle and can fund gas on both networks. Treat a withdrawal as a two-stage operation. The wallet confirmation starts it; the claim completes it.
